What is a Construction Cost Estimator job description?

Construction Cost Estimators need to prepare detailed estimates, Quantity survey with extensions, blueprints, and written specifications for new construction, remodels and retrofits of existing facilities.

The Construction Project Estimator will plan, schedule, and generate construction cost estimates for facility improvement projects, working closely with staff to produce estimates at each design/build phase (as needed). Project costs typically range from $20K to $10million. Generate cost estimates for construction projects in all project stages, including Rough Order of Magnitude and detailed take-offs. Responsibilities to include developing appropriate baseline costs and timeline (schedule) estimates for projects.

Evaluate construction change order cost and schedule changes. Maintain a cost history tracking system for construction projects. Create a schedule of values for approved construction projects. Evaluate progress of construction projects in order to calculate percentage of completed work and the value of construction work performed. Estimate and/or validate change order requests during the construction phase. Distribute project cost estimates and provide explanation of resource analysis to management and relevant staff. Facilitate Change Order processes and lessons-learned meetings.
Requirements

Required:

Associate Degree in Engineering Technology, Construction Project Management, Certified ASPE. A minimum of 8 years full-time experience as a senior estimator across all disciplines (interiors, structural, mechanical, and electrical) for construction projects. Knowledge of standard construction contract documents and procedures.

Experience developing resources allocations, dependencies, and scheduling. Adept skills in project scheduling software. Demonstrated communication skills (verbal and written); team building and negotiation skills. Ability to work multiple tasks and balance competing priorities. Determine risk levels associated with quotes. Valid drivers license required. Applicants will be subject to a drivers record evaluation. Competence in MS Office suite including MS Project.
