What is a Construction Project Manager Job Description ?

Individuals in Project Management are construction professionals who are responsible for the overall success of a wide range of projects of varying levels of complexity. Construction/ Project Managers are accountable for project initiation and planning, and for overseeing development, testing, implementation, and closeout. This includes initial project planning efforts such as developing the project scope, defining project guidelines, obtaining business approvals, and coordinating the resources necessary to successfully complete the project. Review project proposals or plan to determine time frame, funding limitations, procedures for accomplishing projects, staffing requirements, and allotment of available resources to various phases of projects. Establishes work plan and multi-disciplinary staffing for each phase of project, and arranges for recruitment or assignment of project personnel. The responsibility of managing project supervisors/leaders assigned to specific projects.

Once a project is set in motion, the Construction/Project Manager is expected to communicate major milestones, identify potential project risks, provide continuing direction to the project team, and conduct regular status meetings to review project activities. Directs and coordinates activities of project personnel to ensure project progresses on schedule and within prescribed budget. Project Management professionals are also responsible for prioritizing procedures for changing scope and project acceptance procedures. Confers with project personnel to provide technical advice and to resolve problems. Nearing project completion, the Construction/ Project Manager is expected to obtain feedback to assure that project efforts meet customer expectations for agreed upon schedule, cost and objectives. Members of this family are expected to provide the highest level of expertise in the application of the tools and techniques of the project management discipline.

In simple terms a project manager is responsible for running the whole or part of a construction site.

Responsibilities include making preparations before work begins on site including communicating with the public, architects, engineers and cost managers involved on the scheme. It will also involve supervising the building work once work has begun on site.

The project manager will ensure safety measures have been put in place and he or she will often work with construction management software to organize efficient delivery and storage of construction material.

Finally, the work will involve keeping the client informed during construction. A large part of the work is done outdoors on site.
