Salary, Benefits & Job Offer Questions

I am getting ready to accept an offer with a construction employer whom I have wanted to work with for years. I am so excited about the new opportunity but am quite frankly, disappointed with the offer in hand. The hiring manager explained that at this time, they are unable to offer a higher base but may be able to work something out with benefits. Can you assist me with understanding, which benefits can be negotiated and what is reasonable to ask for?

Since this is a construction employer that you have wanted to work for, I understand your desire and reason for flexibility. Fortunately, there are several benefits that can be negotiated. However, you need to make sure that what you are asking for is reasonable and applicable to the position and construction employer: igning Bonus- This is a one-time fee paid to you by the employer when the job has been accepted. This does not increase the base salary and some construction employers may extend a waiting period such as 30, 60 or 90 days before payment is received. Often this may be broken up into several payments over the course of a period of time. You can sweeten your deal by asking- What is the signing bonus for this position? Or IS there a signing bonus for this position? Vacation/Time Off- Extra time off is valuable and a very easy tool in negotiating employment terms. Maybe by asking for several extra personal days or an extended vacation period can re-coop some of the monies lost in the base.

Ask and you MAY receive- This is always good to keep in the back of your mind but make sure not to go overboard for fear of being seen as a needy employee?.

Lastly, Some construction employers offer subsidized daycare, emergency daycare, a fitness center, and flexible hours with telecommuting, sabbaticals, or valet service for dry cleaning or groceries.

Keep an open minds and your flexible attitude and I am sure that you both can come to a mutual agreement.
