Office and field construction administration was provided as the project proceeded through the construction phase.

The project is an engineering and research center owned by a state university and will house laboratory and engineering facilities for graduate students participating with private firms in the development of new products for the bio-medical, automotive and alternative energy industries. The project was completed in the spring of 2010.

ST. ALBERT THE GREAT UNIVERSITY PARISH
ROOF REPLACEMENT
HOUGHTON, MI

Project architect for the replacement of approximately 20,000 SF of existing roof. The building was originally constructed in the late 1960s and is a combination of timber structure and deck at the worship area and steel joists and metal deck at the office, residence and community areas. Over the years, extensive leaks had occurred and caused considerable damage to the timber deck areas of the building as well as to the roof edge, porcelain enamel fascia panel system supporting construction and exposed exterior decks and railing. As the extend of the concealed damage was estimated to be considerable, a series of potential scenarios were developed and unit prices integrated into the bidding documents as a means of controlling costs to mitigate the concealed damage. The project was completed in the summer of 2009 with a minimal amount of unexpected impact to the project schedule and budget.

PUBLIC SCHOOLS OF CALUMET, LAURIUM AND KEWEENAW
ROOF REPLACEMENT
CALUMET, MI AND MOHAWK, MI

Project architect for a 140,000 SF roof replacement project at the main campus of CLK Schools and the Alternative Education Facility at Mohawk, MI. The existing main campus buildings were constructed at various times beginning in 1907 with the High School, the Middle School in 1929 Between the early 1970s and late 1990s, other additions renovations including the Elementary School and Interconnector were constructed. The Mohawk, MI facility was constructed in the late 1960s.

Numerous re-roofing and roof maintenance projects were undertaken over this time that lead to a number of different roofing types and systems being in place when the current roof project was undertaken. The age of the existing structures required expensive examination of the existing structural conditions before selecting an overall roof system that would provide the greatest opportunity to increase energy efficiency, meet the requirements of the existing construction conditions and be universal to all buildings so that the system could be furnished, installed and warranted by a single manufacturer and installer. The system selected is warranted for 20 years and expected to provide a service life exceeding 30 years. Construction is scheduled to be complete by early September, 2010.

ST. SEBASTIAN PARISH
ROOF REPLACEMENT-SCHOOL BUILDING
BESSEMER, MI

Project architect for the roof replacement of 22,000 SF of roof at the existing parish school building. The building currently serves as a location for Head Start and alternative education programs.

The building was originally constructed in the early 1960s and had undergone a unsuccessful re-roofing in 2004. The original roof and recover roof were completely torn off to expose the existing structure before installing a new single ply membrane roof system with increased insulation, all new flashing materials and metal roof edge system. The project was completed in May, 2010.

STATE OF MICHIGAN
DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
NORTH REGION OFFICE BUILDING
GAYLORD, MI

Project Architect, responsible for the design, preparation of construction documents, construction administration and overall project management of a 15,000 square-foot administrative office facility planned to accommodate 90 state employees consolidated from service centers throughout the North Region. The design had to accommodate a future addition that will bring the total staff to approximately 150 persons. The building incorporates many sustainable design elements to satisfy the State of Michigan mandate for all new construction projects. Ten dormer lightwells allow natural light into the staff work areas that are away from the windows around the perimeter. High performance glass allows maximum daylight to enter the building while reducing heating and cooling costs. Operable windows, individual lighting and temperature controls for staff work areas and occupancy sensors in all rooms contribute to the energy efficiency of the building. Interior finishes are oil-free low-VOC paints and coatings, natural woods, and other finishes with high recycled material content. The majority of the site was left in a natural vegetative condition. Conveniences for car pooling and bicycle riders were included to encourage the use of alternative means of transportation. Recycling of a major portion of construction waste was required. Should the State of Michigan desire to have this building LEED Certified, the design would enable the facility to score the 26 points required at the time the building was constructed.
