| Objective : |
The specific responsibilities of safety specialists and technicians vary by industry, workplace, and types of hazards. In most settings, they first identify hazardous conditions and practices. Some specialists develop methods to predict hazards from experience, historical data, accident analyses, and other information sources. Then they identify where controls need to be implemented. As necessary, they conduct training sessions for management and workers on health and safety practices and regulations. To measure and control hazardous substances, such as noise or radiation levels, safety specialists and technicians prepare and calibrate scientific equipment. They collect samples of dust, gases, vapors, and other potentially toxic materials to ensure personal safety and accurate test results. Their work also involves recording observations, analysis of contaminants, and recommendations for control and correction of hazards. Inspectors may prepare accident reports and documents used in legal proceedings, and give testimony in court proceedings. Specialists and technicians that concentrate in particular areas include environmental protection officers, ergonomists, health physicists, industrial hygienists, and mine inspectors. Manage the overall safety, health, and environmental programs. Establish programs and goals to assure compliance with local, state and federal agencies and to raise employee awareness of risks and to reduce, avoid, and protect employees from hazards in the workplace, including occupational illness or disease.
