EMPLOYMENT Company (2007 2008). Chagrin Falls, Ohio Controller for two construction companies, a development company, an excavating company, numerous partnerships, for a total of twelve entities, with a consolidated budget in excess of $150,000,000. I was the third Controller in less than two years.
Direct reports included one financial accountant (CPA), three project accountants, and one accounts payable clerk.
Accomplishments included: Discovery of two accounting errors totaling $300,000 of funds previously not recorded; Discovery of a $300,000 discrepancy in the Work-In Process profitability report; Eliminated $50K of accounts payable older than two years, increasing Misc. Income; Discovery of significant operating cash deficits and prompted the necessary action to resolve; Creation of monthly financial reports for single entities and consolidation of primary companies via the Timberline software system; Incorporated a Changes in Cash Position Statement (via Timberline) with the monthly financials; Introduction of monthly management narrative of the financial statements; Creation of a cash requirements reports (global and job specific) via Timberline system.
Company (2006 2007) Solon, Ohio Position of Controller/General Manager for a construction, property management, and development company, with an operating budget in excess of $10,000,000.
The Controllers position had been vacant for nine months, and therefore my initial efforts were to reconstruct correct records to complete the filing of the 2005 tax returns and provide current financial statements to owners.
Direct reports included three project accountants.
Accomplishments included: Expensed to the 2005 Bad Debt $90,000 of receivables outstanding for two plus years; Filed first real estate tax appeal in six years to reduce the market value from $9.4 million to $8 million; Discovery of a continuous six year accounting error, reducing taxable income $158,000; Restructure of the companys health insurance plan produced $7,000 of savings without a reduction in benefits; Introduced monthly financial statements, with narrative of variances, versus the previous quarterly financial statements; Reduction of external CPA billed hours for financial statement and tax return preparation from 34 hours for 2005 to 23 hours for 2006; Corrected and re-established 2004 base year escalation expenses; Creation of a new chart of accounts to provide detailed operating information.
