POSITION SUMMARY:
This is an exciting and busy time for the Royal Ontario Museum. Since the Museum’s facilities and operations are a key component to the organization’s future programmatic growth and success, the appointment of the Executive Director Capital Development and Facilities is critical. The Museum seeks a flexible, collaborative, transparent, and responsive leader to manage the growing needs of an emerging, dynamic, and vibrant institution. The position’s performance expectations include: Develop multi-year maintenance plan to ensure that the quality of the visitor experience is at the highest level. Establish credibility with his or her peers within the facilities and operations function as well as curators, scholars, and others at the Museum. Keep projects on time and on budget. The ideal candidate will possess a broad and strong track record in facilities operations and design and construction issues. The person will be a Professional Engineer. Organized, technically sound and credible, the candidate will be a successful, flexible, responsive, and team-oriented manager who is a good problem solver, and exhibits a proactive and transparent style. Possessing a sense of urgency, she or he must demonstrate an ability to work within a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment. The person must also be a good manager of resources and finances. Strategic in nature, the ideal candidate will have excellent skills in building relationships, communicating effectively, and serving the needs of others. The person must be articulate, committed, and an excellent listener. Most importantly, the ideal candidate will need to be responsive and have a propensity to get things done.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversees all aspects of the Museum’s facilities operations and maintenance efforts including all building infrastructure systems, and preservation and restoration of the Museum.
Maintain a high level of facility maintenance and cleanliness at all times.
Ensures that the performance of Museum contractors, including those responsible for building operation and maintenance is of the highest professional standards.
Establishes standards and provides leadership and planning for the department to assure proper functioning of all facilities.
Collaborates with curators, peers, colleagues, administrators, and others in the Museum to maximize performance.
Ensures that all building systems including but not limited to mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, etc. are properly operated and maintained to achieve high-quality performance and economically, safe operation.
Prepares, monitors, and controls departmental operating budgets and handles the preparation of the Museum’s capital budgets.
Ensures that all subcontractors employed by Museum contractors perform their duties and responsibilities to the highest professional standards.
Monitors and controls project budgets and schedules to make sure these projects are completed on time and within budget.
Evaluates staff performance and prepare review performance evaluations for assigned personnel. Serves as a guide, coach, and mentor to direct reports and staff.
Develops and fosters excellent working relationships with various City of Toronto departments, commissions and agencies.
Ensure the mechanical and environmental conditions of the facilities are maintained to protect and preserve the collections of the Museum.
Creates and sustains an environment that fosters teamwork, excellence, cooperation, respect, and diversity.
Ensures that the division is delivering its services in the most cost-effective manner
Represents the division in a collegial, responsive, flexible, customer friendly and professional manner and serves as the facilities and operations representative to various constituencies at the Museum including curators, the Board of Trustee’s, administrators, and vendors.
REQUIREMENTS:
Professional Engineer designation.
A minimum of 10 years of facilities and operations experience with significant leadership and management experience.
Experience with cultural institutions is preferred, but expertise in higher education or corporate property management environments will also be considered.
Experience managing staff in a team-based, collaborative, and consensus-driven environment.
Extensive experience managing facilities and operations unit within a highly complex and nuanced environment.
Sensitivity to working in an historic building and one of architectural significance.
Well-developed planning, scheduling and strategic planning skills are a must.
An ability to oversee multiple projects concurrently.
A polished, diplomatic, and flexible management style that is hands-on, fair and sets high expectations.
An ethic of customer service with a proactive team oriented approach to both internal and external constituencies.
Experience in budget preparation and fiscal management is required.
A high level of comfort with a fast-paced, lean, and sometimes hectic environment where priorities can change rapidly.
An interest in working within an organization with high standards for performance.

| Company Description: |
With an annual budget of more than $4 million, the Capital Development and Facilities function consists of Operations and Facilities Maintenance, Facilities Contracts, Capital Projects and in-house construction activities. The function is responsible for taking care of the grounds and maintenance for all of the Museum’s properties. The Executive Director of Capital Development and Facilities has a span of control of approximately 40 employees, including 2 engineers, 4 mechanics, 30 housekeeping, one carpenter, and two management positions.
The Museum is in the midst of a $1 million exterior envelope project to repair the original roof and to restore its 1939 east facade.
