Job Description: |
This senior legal position provides legal advice and counsel to the executive vice president of claims and to other members of the organization's senior management group. The position also supports senior managers in the business and underwriting communities on claims and policy related issues and developing trends. The position interacts with claims, underwriting, the business units and the corporate law department on issues of systemic importance.
The successful candidate will also manage the claims legal operations in Baltimore and Schaumburg which includes directing operations relating to management of coverage and coverage/extracontractual litigation and the provision of legal counseling and training to all parts of them claim department.
Job Qualifications
Qualifications include 15+ years of relevant legal experience with strong technical knowledge in the areas of coverage law, policy construction, and general legal and industry issues relating to the business of insurance. The candidate we choose will have demonstrated leadership abilities with strong verbal and written communication skills and a history building outstanding working relationships internally and externally, including at the senior management level.
The ability to analyze and implement solutions to complex legal and business problems, as well as the ability to manage others in provision of a broad range of technical support to a large and diverse claims organization are essential. Outstanding client service skills and the ability to operate successfully in a team environment are also essential.
The successful candidate must have the excellent management skills required to direct a staff of 24 attorneys and 7 paralegals and support staff. There are major legal organizations in both Schaumburg and Baltimore who are responsible for directly handling lawsuits against various Zurich companies. These groups are also responsible for providing legal counseling to the claims field organization and to all of the claims specialty organizations, for performing policy language reviews in support of underwriting, and assisting the underwriting organization in the development of new policy language.
