Job Description: |
The New School is a progressive university with exceptional strengths in design and liberal and performing arts, located in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City. The Director of Space Planning plays a critical role in support of its academic mission through planning, managing, assessing and recording the University's space inventory. The position reports to the Vice President for Design, Construction and Facilities Management.
Responsibilities:
• Evaluates existing facilities and options for future expansion, contributes strategic planning to update and develop the University's long-range physical master plan
• Ensures the maintenance of a complete and up-to-date data base of plans and room attributes for space in approximately 30 buildings owned and rented in several areas of the city, comprising about 1.5 million square feet of space
• Provides analysis of space utilization by every university constituency in relation to student enrolment and faculty and staff employment
• Works cooperatively with numerous architects, engineers and facilities managers to help generate space programs for new construction and existing facility renovation
• Coordinates with the University Registrar, Scheduler and Institutional Research Office to ascertain the availability and efficient use of the University's space resources
• Works with the Director of Real Estate to evaluate opportunities for new space acquisition
• Manages numerous requests for internal moves, furnishings and equipment by evaluating their necessity and feasibility
• Prepares drawings and sketches to test the fit of proposed moves, reconfigurations and furnishing and to illustrate planning objectives and options
Requirements:
• Minimum of five years experience and degree in planning-related field
• Architectural degree and experience preferred
• Higher education planning experience preferred
• Skilled in use of software for database management, CAD, graphics and spreadsheets
