Job Description: |
The New York Transit Museum is the largest museum of public transportation history in the United States, and one of a handful of such museums throughout the world. The Deputy Director serves as the Director's principal administrator in the general operations of the museum. This includes the supervision of the bulk of the staff and the day-to-day operations of the museum, as well as the overall operations of the museum stores. Oversight and management of Museum facilities is a critical responsibility, including maintenance of systems, and security and safety of visitors and staff. This position also oversees production of all Museum print and promotional materials, including calendars, brochures, postcards, signage and advertising.
Responsibilities
° Manage all aspects of daily operations of the Transit Museum's 60,000 SF/bi-level historic site, including proper functioning of all safety systems, adherence to safety policies and procedures, daily visitor flow, general staff support, special events and programs, internal controls, overall administration, housekeeping and ensuring that the general appearance and overall condition of the museum and exhibits are properly maintained;
° Directly oversee and manage operations staff, retail stores staff and facilities including the coordination of the requisite repairs and improvements to Museum facilities with MTA operating agency departments, and oversee implementation;
° Supervise visitor services, press/media operations, revenue generating facility rental (film shoots, photo shoots, receptions and children's birthday parties), and in-house use of facility by MTA agencies for training (disabled training, EMT, NYPD, NYFD, etc.).
° Serve as key member of senior staff, participating in formation of all policy and procedures; long-range planning; counsel director in all issues relating to operations, promotion, retail and building/facility management;
° Provide supervision and oversight for all planned and future major renovations of the museum and its satellite locations, including design and construction, ensuring adherence to the historical integrity of the Museum's Brooklyn site and special requirements of other sites, including the gallery annex and store at Grand Central Terminal and the new Court Street entrance kiosk.
° Maintain and update the Museum's Policy & Procedures manual and monitor adherence to established regulations by all museum staff, agencies personnel, and visitors;
° Develop and direct all production and distribution of Museum graphics/publications as well as maintain/update Museum web site;
° Manage the Museum's print media advertising as well as related museum accounts;
° Serve as Treasurer for Friends of NY Transit Museum, the Museum's non-profit affiliate.
° Act as principal logistics coordinator for all major Museum events;
° Lead weekly staff meetings, staff policy meetings and perform other duties, as directed.
Qualifications
° Exceptional leadership and management skills with the ability to adapt to changing requirements and situations with tact and good judgment;
° Working knowledge of construction and/or the exhibiting of museum items preferred;
° Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
° Detail-oriented individual with exceptional time management skills, proven problem-solving abilities, and a well-developed capacity for strategic thinking;
° Self-starter who can develop and administer applicable museum-driven work plans involving interrelated processes, and who can operate productively and efficiently under exacting time constraints;
° A working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and related applications.
Education and Experience
° BA/BS or equivalent work experience, plus a minimum of five years experience in a professional / managerial role in a museum or non-profit. A Masters Degree is preferred
° Prior proven experience in all aspects of museum/facilities operation, including staff supervision, facilities management, visitors services, and events coordination.
° Experience in managing graphics, publications, and press relations required.
