The San Francisco office of one of the largest and most AE firms in the country seeks a leader to galvanize the regional office’s thinking around urban design and help it become a significant force in the Urban Design community, nationally. Strong leadership has been tapped to enhance the reputation of the firm in Northern California from a design point of view: as a result, the San Francisco office is experiencing an exciting rejuvenation of interest among clients in its design capability. A senior urban designer will broaden the office’s design offering, enhancing its ability to interpret clients’ larger-scale needs and delivering on that understanding. While this individual will be based in San Francisco, there are many opportunities for collaborating across the firm on projects in other locations. Over the past decade, clients from the public, institutional and private sectors have gained a greater appreciation of the contribution that training and sensitivity about context can make to their organizational missions. Accordingly, urban designers are increasingly sought to integrate the contributions of architects, planners and landscape architects in an urban fabric that requires knowledge of all three disciplines. Wherever it offers urban design expertise, this firm wants to be able to offer a depth of understanding to their clients that provides a broad understanding of place, region, and experience.
We recognize that there are few schools that offer degrees or even concentrations in urban design. Many accomplished urban design professionals have learned on the job. This is a senior level position requiring experience over the years that has demanded leadership skills at all levels: mentoring junior staff, leading a team, working with communities to gain consensus, building internal appreciation for what urban design can offer and much more.
