I recently moved to a new location and am beginning a job search. How do I go about networking in a new city that I do not know much about?
Networking is a key part of the job search, particularly in today's tight job market. The first thing I would look for are professional organizations in your area of work. You can research this online or go to your local library.
Another tip is to write down everyone you know - even if they have nothing to do with your professional life. Send them a note or call them and explain that you are trying to generate contact sources. You might just be surprised at who other people know or what additional ideas they might come up with.
The other suggestion is an informational interview. Look at construction employers in the area employing people with your skills and find someone in the organization you can meet with. The point is to tap into their knowledge pool. |
