What is mentoring and why is it important to my career and advancement?

While there are no standards or rules that say that every successful executive must be mentored, this can be said for many success stories. Mentoring is using the knowledge and wisdom of executives within the industry in order to further yourself.
In a way, it can be considered networking to a certain extent but it is taken a step further. By careful observation, and acquired understanding, your mentor is able to assist you in making a move upward on the organizational ladder.
Many construction employers have adopted this philosophy in order to breed seasoned executives and to maintain the quality of employees that has made the construction employer successful.
With the proper attitude and mentor, you are able to mature and grow into what the construction employer is expecting as well as what you are trying to achieve. Check with your construction employer to see if a mentoring program is available. If not, there are firms which provide mentors but this is often confused with career coaching.
