How important is it to have a mentor?
CEOs and successful executives owe part of their success to mentors who helped them at important stages with their careers. It is always wise to obtain good advice and guidance from someone who knows the ropes, and who knows your strengths and weaknesses.
Mentors can help you develop new skills, and offer you their knowledge and experience but they expect you to show them respect and appreciation. Mentoring is usually volunteer work, and mentors do not want to waste time with individuals who do not know where they are going, and who do not listen.
The best mentors are often executives who have been in the position you now hold, and have a good industry reputation for performance and integrity. Mentors who have a similar style and strengths as you do can better understand what hurdles you may encounter and how to best avoid them.
However, mentors with different backgrounds and strengths can gain you a different perspective. The best mentors are those you personally seek out for guidance. Everyone likes to help an up-and-comer who respects their input. Approach potential mentors with respect and be sensitive to their time restrictions. Always treat your mentor with appreciation and a thank you note whenever they take time to assist or guide you.
If you can't locate a mentor through your construction employer or trade association, speak to your local Chamber of Commerce or SCORE chapter (Service Corps of Retired Executives: www.score.org). |
